Pre-formulation studies on formulation and evaluation of 5-fluorouracil cream from 5-fluorouracil injection
Pre-formulation of 5-Florouracil cream
Abstract
Creams are consistent semi-solid dosage form that are used as vehicle for drug. One of such cream is 5 Fluorouracil cream, recommended for the topical treatment of multiple actinic or solar keratosis. Its injection is the only dosage form available. In this study, 5 Fluorouracil cream was formulated from the
injections. The ratio of various concentration of fatty acid to fatty acid soap were used to prepare vanish cream. Stearic acid was chosen as the fatty acid and the polysorbate 60 was chosen as the soap. The cosurfactant were cetyl alcohol and petrolatum while glycerine and propylene glycol were used as humectant. The optimized vanish cream consists of concentrations 5:1. The concentrations had white, odourless, consistent oil in water cream with no foreign matter. The pH and viscosity were 6.5 and 127 cp0 respectively. It was thermostable at 50 C for 96 hrs. The present study showed that 5-Fu cream can be
formulated from injection and made availaible to our patients especially the albinos.
