Vitiligo universalis - Case report and review of literature
Vitiligo Universalis
Abstract
Vitiligo is a disease that is caused by the loss of melanocytes, and can be classified into localized, acrofacial, generalized and universal. In localized form, the white patches are confined to restricted areas, but in generalized vitiligo, they are scattered throughout the body surface. While in the universal vitiligo, almost the entire body surface can be depigmented, leaving only a few normally pigmented macules/patches in some areas. Treatment options for vitiligo focus on either repigmentation or depigmentation depending on the extent of affection. Depigmentation remains the only option for patients with vitiligo universalis.
This is the case of a 72-year old lady with the rare vitiligo universalis.
